Dealing with damage

Owners may feel aggrieved if one owner, their visitors, or tradespeople they have employed, have caused damage to the common property.

Ideally, the owner concerned should pay for the damage, if necessary calling on their insurance or seeking recompense from the tradesperson.

However, sometimes the owner refuses to pay, or it cannot be proved that the owner, their visitor, or tradesperson has caused the damage. In this case, it may be best to maintain good neighbourly relationships and just share costs as set out above. If you do not wish to do this, follow the procedures set out for dealing with disputes.

You may also be able to claim on your common insurance policy.
