Employed by the client in a construction project, the job of the clerk of works is to keep an eye on the building works.

Small-scale tenement repair projects rarely employ a clerk of works. 

Membership of the Institute of Clerk of Works is advisable.

The clerk of works will make regular visits to the site to check that the work is carried out to the required standard using good workmanship, the correct specifications, and materials. If there is a problem, the clerk of works will report to the architect. 

Cost of using a clerk of works

You can hire a clerk of works on an hourly rate but you will have to pay for their travel time as well. Rates of about £30 an hour plus VAT should be expected.
